Maltese Puppies

Grooming Your Maltese

Maltese hair will grow to very long, and can be up to 12" inches in length.  Their hair is
hypo allergenic, therefore a Maltese puppy is a great pet for people with allergies or asthma. They are very clean dogs, and are generally known to be "odor-free." The Maltese experience little to no shedding if their coats are maintained properly. Be sure to train them when they are puppies to get used to being brushed and groomed.
We recommend that you start bathing and grooming your Maltese puppies a few days  after they arrive and feel safe and secure in your home.
Bath time is a good time to clean ears, brush the teeth, and clip the nails.  Be very gentle with your new puppy as not to frighten him in his new environment. Gently soak him with water and soap and as you rinse him, give him praise such as "good baby," "good puppy" this helps reassure the puppy and keep them calm.
After his bath as you are towel drying the puppy give hime lots of Praise so that he feels very proud of what he has accomplished. You should always dry your Maltese with a hair dryer on low setting, gently brushing his hair to keep it nice and silky. Your Maltese should have his hair brushed at least every other day to prevent  matts and tangling. Many owners prefer to get their Maltese groomed with a puppy cut. This allows the hair to be shorter and does not require as much daily brushing and combing.

There are so many Shampoos and Conditioners that are good to use for your Maltese hair.....

Our personal preference is 'Shimmer Lights Shampoo' (can be purchased at Sally's Beuty Supply) and smells incredible.......

And for the Conditioner we love, it is called  'Hair Insurance' made by Aussie products and smells wonderful as well....

Your Maltese Ears:
It is good idea to check your Maltese ears  weekly. Maltese have hair that grows inside their ears and it should be removedregularly. To clean the ears, hold your puppy on your lap pressing his head and body against your chest. Fold his ear back toward the top of the head, holding it open with your fingers. Use your finger under the open ear to push the area around the opening up, this will present the hair that is inside the ear. Making sure to only pull the hair that is growing inside the ear, and not the hair on his ear flap. Using a  pair of tweezers, pull the hairs growing out of the ear opening. This will not hurt your puppy, as long as you don't pull any hair attached to the ear . Doing this will prevent your Maltese from getting ear infections or having an itch in the ear.

Nails :
You should trim your Maltese nails about every 2 weeks,  There are a couple of different clippers that you can purchase.... for puppies we prefer human toe nail clippers. The puppy nails are very small and easy to trim. These clippers are easy to hold an will not frighten your puppy. As he grows older you can then choose a larger clipper especially for dogs. When you  begin to clip the nails hold the finger you are going to cut between your forefinger and thumb, squeeze gently. The nail will come forward. Clip the nail just below the pink (quick) of the nail, making sure not to cut into the quick.
After you cut the nails, you can file them with a human nail file, as the nail will be a little sharp at first.  File around the edges to smooth it. Your puppy will  not like the filing sensation, but just hold him firmly and talking to him while you are filing,  reassuringhim that he is 'such a good boy'..... Lots of kisses help, too.
Trim the hair between the toe pads with small scissors about every other week as well.  Scissors are good to use will not frighten your puppy. The  Maltese hair grows here as it does on the rest of his body, and will get long and matted if not trimmed.
Teeth:
It is good to clean your Maltese teeth  once a week. If your puppy does not seem interested in the dog toothpaste, a good way to start is to put some soft dog food on your finger, and use your finger to gently rub the teeth and gums.  Your puppy will love the taste of the dog food and  this will get him used to you reaching into his mouth and become adjusted to the motion of the brushing on his teeth.
After your puppy is adjusted to this procedure, you can then start using dog toothpaste. Always use dog toothpaste, never human toothpaste, as it can cause your puppy to become sick... you can find dog toothpaste at any pet store.
