Caring for your new Baby
When you decide to buy a puppy from Adorable Pals, you are buying a puppy that has been our pet for at least 8 weeks. It has been handled, hugged, spoiled, vet checked, wormed, had all necessary shots, and overall prepared to go into homes as a lovable and enjoyable addition to the family.
When a puppy leaves our home it will probably miss us as well as its siblings. Watch for signs of loneliness and depression
Many of our puppies are very small, and vulnerable, and need special consideration until they get a few months old. Hugs from small children are wonderful, but rough handling should be cautioned against and forbidden. The same thing applies to bigger pets being too aggressive toward smaller ones, even though they are only playing.
If your Maltese baby arrives to you by plane, he will be nervous and shy for the first day or so that he is your home. Remember that EVERYTHING is new to him ,and it will take him just a little time to adjust. Having a new Maltese puppy is very similar to a new baby in the house. Loud noises, slamming doors, screaming and shouting should be avoided for the first few days that you have your new puppy.
He will need to hugged, cuddled and loved as much as possible... this will let him know that he is entering a new environment that will be very good to him.
A carrier is a good idea for your baby to sleep in at night for the first few days at least.... many Maltese love their alone time in their carrier, as this gives them room to stretch etc.. and sleep very comfortably. This will also prevent him from getting into something that could harm him when everyone in the house is asleep. We suggest putting his carrier near someone in the house so that if he wakes up he will smell your scent and will not feel alone. It is also a good idea to put his blanket, or bed that we send with him, or even a small article of clothing that belongs to you in his carrier. This scent will remind him that he is not in a strange place at all, and will help him sleep much more comfortably.
~ Your new puppy will need a safe place to rest and sleep, a carrier or "den" make a nice safe place for him.
~ Socialization is very important to your new puppy's development. Spend lots of time loving, playing and traininghim. This will create a great bond between you, and your new family member. Be sure not to over tire the puppy.
~ If your puppy is going to be left alone during the day, be sure to have plenty of safe toys and a safe area are provided. An an area with a tiled or linoleum floor, like the kitchen, with the exits blocked works great, or a puppy exercise pen. Baby gates can be used to block exits...Make sure your puppy has plenty of food, water, safe toys, and puppy pads ...You should make arrangements to check on the puppy during the day, or have someone who can help check for you, especially when you first bring him home...A young Maltese puppy should not be left alone for extended periods, as they could become stressed and could even become ill.
~ If possible purchase a good Maltese Breed book and study up before bringing your new puppy home.
~ Small children should have very strict supervision handling your new puppy. A child does not generally understand that a puppy is fragile; to a youngster he is like his toy dogs. Young children could unknowingly cause serious injury to a small puppy. A puppy can jump from your childrens arms or trip a child causing injury to both.

Tips on taking care of your new puppy.
~ Be sure to take your new puppy for it's first veterinarian visit within the first 72 hours you have him.Our Maltese puppies will have received at least 2 to 3 vaccinations before leaving our home. Take your health records that we provide,so that your vet will be informed of his current vaccinations and de-wormings.
When you go to the vet, we recommend that you be very cautious, as so many people take their sick animals there. Never allow your puppy to be in contact with any other animals there, or put him on the floor. Make sure that the Vet has the examination table disinfected prior to placing your new puppy on it. It is also a great idea to disinfect your shoes after a visit to the veterinarians office. Bleach will kill parvovirous. Do not allow your new puppy to lick or chew on your shoes.
